Aquaculture Remote Classroom

27th Jan 2023

The ARC is a classroom on wheels that visits primary schools around Ireland with the purpose of raising awareness about Irish aquaculture to 5th and 6th class students. Developed by Bord Iascaigh Mhara, this initiative is part of a European-wide campaign called #FarmedintheEU.

The term aquaculture is used to describe the farming of plants and animals in the water, a term which is often misunderstood by so many, despite it being one of the most sustainable ways of producing protein for people and our planet. This ARC initiative aims to bridge this knowledge gap about aquaculture through this initiative. This is funded by the Government of Ireland and the EU under the European Maritime and Fisheries Operational Programme.

These topics were covered in the ARC workshops:

  • The Origins of Seafood
  • Geography & Climate
  • Socioeconomics
  • Health & Nutrition

The ARC workshop was presented by Katie Boyle, a marine microbiologist. We are very grateful to Katie and her team for facilitating these amazing workshops!
