Fifth Class Archaeological Excavation at the Green Fort

10th Jun 2025

Fifth Class enjoyed a trip to Green Fort with Dr. Marion Dowd to observe an archaeological excavation of a Bastion Fort take place. Marion talked to us about the history of the fort and the steps involved in the five year excavation of the site. She explained the use of a geophysical survey to decide where exactly on the site was best to excavate. The archaeologists showed us some of their findings so far such as parts of red brick, a key, pottery, glass, pipes, bullets and a button which is thought to be from a soldier's uniform. Their most common find so far has been pipes which the soldiers used for smoking. These artefacts will then be taken to the University to clean and study closely. Fifth Class thoroughly enjoyed their trip.
