First Class Walk

28th Apr 2022

First Class made a great start to Term 3! We have been identifying and comparing famous Irish bridges such as The Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge, The Ha’penny Bridge and The Samuel Beckett Bridge. We are most fortunate to have a number of bridges in such close proximity to Carbury and so we set off on Tuesday afternoon to discover the bridges in our own locality.

Our first stop was directly behind Carbury as we discovered that this beam bridge for pedestrians is called John Fallon Bridge. Next, on our walking tour, we came to Bridge Street and noticed a stone bridge with six arches. As we made our way along by the Garavogue River we approached a truss bridge which serves pedestrians crossing from Rockwood Parade to Stephen Street. The fourth bridge we discovered is called Hyde Bridge, named after the first president of Ireland. It was previously called Victoria Bridge. This is also a stone bridge which is supported by arches. Under one of these arches we watched a heron enjoy a fish which he had just caught from the water.

We were much luckier than this heron however! Kyle wanted to call into Grappa to say “Hello” to his mum as we made our way back to Carbury. Siobhán very kindly treated everybody to a delicious ice cream. I’m sure the heron would be very jealous of us as we enjoyed vanilla, oreo and honeycomb flavoured cones. A big “Thank you” to Siobhán for her generosity. I’m sure the taste of our refreshing treats will remain in our memories longer than all we learned about the bridges of Sligo!
