Science Week in Fifth and Sixth Classes

7th Dec 2021

For Science Week Fifth and Sixth Classes concentrated on an agricultural theme. This coincided with issued raised in COP26. In our classes we discussed topics such as sustainability and climate change. We learned about many forms of farming, including the dairy sector. We investigated the benefits of milk in our diet and even gave butter churning a try.

Good quality soil is paramount to effective growth of crops. We surveyed a patch of ground in the school environs, paying particular attention to worm count and the ph of the soil. The pupils concluded that the presence of worms is essential to maintain the correct balance between oxygen and nutrient value of within the soil.

The classes watched a webinar, facilitated by Teagasc. The panel of experts enabled the pupils to see the role of the dairy industry in Ireland and the importance it has to our economy. Milk production was explored and we even learned how green grass is ingested and how white milk is produced.
