Floating and Sinking Experiments with Senior Infants

21st Nov 2022

Firstly, we predicted what fruit would sink and what fruit would float, after comparing the two fruits.
We were amazed, when the larger and heavier fruit, the orange, floated and the lighter and smaller fruit, the lime, sank to the very bottom of our bowl of water. 3 children guessed correctly that the lime would sink and 5 children guessed that the orange would float to the top.
We decided to investigate further, how could we make the orange sink and the lime float? We discovered that if we removed the peel from the orange it would sink. The lime floated when it was placed in very salty water – just like we can float in the Dead Sea!
