As part of Science week in schools around Ireland, First and Second classes visited Streedagh Beach yesterday. The pupils were very excited to visit the beach and to learn about the animals, birds and plants that live there. We saw plenty of Oyster Catchers and Gulls and saw signs of rabbits, hares and other smaller mammals. While on the beach walk the children learned about the many fossils that may be seen in the stones, and rocks at and around Streedagh. Many of the fossils are millions of years old coral reefs that have been captured in the rocks. The pupils also learned about the many types of seaweeds that may be seen around our coasts and about the importance of sand dunes and the importance of the marram grass that hold our dunes together and help to protect our coast lines. Finally, the pupils collected some of the plastics that had been washed ashore in the last storm. We all had an excellent field trip and learned a lot of new information.
